Why We Love It

Bring delightful spring cherry blossom to your garden with Prunus incisa 'Kojou-no-mai' a pretty Fuji cherry tree.

The ancient Japanese name means 'flight of the butterflies', from where this beautiful tree was first disovered along the Yoshida path to Mount Fuji.

When your cherry blossom begins to bloom in early March, it transforms into a lovely cloud of delicate white flowers with candy pink centres.

This charming little tree is an exciting addition to any outdoor space and even small outdoor spaces can enjoy this compact shrub as it only grows to approximately two metres tall.

Cherry blossom is happy to be pruned, so you can maintain its petite form - also making it a popular choice for a Bonsai tree.

Even when it's not in bloom the Kojou-no-mai tree is an excellent choice for autumn colour, thanks to the foliage that turns vibrant orange before dropping for winter.

The serrated lance-shaped leaves reappear in spring - starting out pale green and growing darker with age.

The decorative pot pictured is sold separately.

Planting and Care

'Kojo-no-mai' is a hardy little tree that's happy in moist but well-drained soil in full sunshine. It's a true showpiece, so choose a spot where everyone is likely to see it.

Into the Ground

'Kojo-no-mai' has a gentle spreading habit and makes a lovely addition to a garden border. To plant it you'll need compost, a spade and a watering tool.

  • Enrich the soil by mixing in your compost.
  • Dig a hole twice as wide as your cherry tree's rootball.
  • Carefully place it in the hole, making sure the top of the rootball lines up with ground level.
  • Backfill the hole with your soil and compost mix.
  • Water the tree generously to help the soil and roots settle.

Into a Pot

Because of its small size, 'Kojo-no-mai' is perfect for planting in containers. Choose one that's twice the size of the nursery pot so that the roots have room to grow. You'll also need some tree and shrub soil, a trowel and a watering can.

  • Raise your container on pot feet so that the soil drains easily.
  • Fill the container with your growing medium.
  • Dig a hole twice the size of your cherry tree's rootball.
  • Place your tree in the hole, carefully lining up the top of the rootball with the soil.
  • Backfill the hole with soil. Water generously.
  • Water whenever the top of the soil is dry.
