Why We Love It

The two-tone colour of the 'Handel' blush pink rose makes a dazzling display in summer and autumn.

It appears either singly or in eye-catching clusters with the creamy-white petals edged with pink contrasted against dark green glossy foliage.

It's a vigorous climber ideal for growing up walls and fences to frame your outdoor space.

It's not only beautiful it also has a subtle scent that can be enjoyed while you sit out on your terrace or patio.

This versatile plant will thrive in most soils but it likes to catch some rays so position it where it can soak up the sunlight.

The decorative pot is sold separately.

How to Plant

The 'Handel' likes rich, well-drained soil and a sun-drenched position. Apply fertiliser and mulch in late winter or early spring, then fertilise again in early summer for best results.

Into the Ground

When you're ready to plant your 'Handel' blush pink rose, grab your spade, fork, watering tool, some compost and fertiliser. You'll also need something for it to climb.

  1. Mix your compost and fertiliser into the top 20-30 cm of the soil.
  2. Dig a hole twice the size of the rose's rootball.
  3. Place the rose in the hole, with the graft union (where the branches start) level with the top of the soil.
  4. Gently backfill the hole.
  5. Water well.
  6. Feed with fertiliser and top-dress with mulch every spring
  7. Prune strong stems to 30-40 cm above ground level in the first winter after planting.
  8. Deadhead and trim spindly growth during the growing season.

Into a Pot

To grow your rose in a container, you'll want a large one – these vigorous plants like to spread their roots. You'll also need a spade or trowel, a watering tool and a growing medium – loam-based composts are ideal.

  1. Place your container on some bricks so water can drain.
  2. Dig a hole double the size of the plant's rootball.
  3. Pop the rose in the hole, with the graft union (the point where the branches start) level with the top of the soil.
  4. Backfill and water well.
  5. Repot every two to three years in a larger pot with fresh compost.
