Why We Love It

The olive tree (Olea europaea) is an attractive, slow-growing evergreen commonly found in the Mediterranean and loved by many as a reminder of summer holidays.

This plant is grown in a standard form consisting of a long straight trunk and a rounded head of foliage, like a lollipop. This standard olive tree adds an interesting outline to your planting scheme, as well as year-round foliage.

It certainly gives your garden kudos or your patio that look of grandeur when it's put in a favourite pot of yours, and left to bask in the sun over the summer.

It is covered in small, silver-grey leaves and is happy to grow in a hot, dry garden.

In the summer this plant produces clusters of small white flowers that are followed by small, round green olives that ripen to black (in ideal conditions!) In particularly hot and sunny summers you may be rewarded with a harvest of olives, but generally these are quite difficult to grow in the UK.

Worry not, if the fruits didn't form this year - there's always the next.

How to Plant

Olives like the sun; there's no two ways about it. What's good to know is that they are happy in the shallowest and stoniest of soils, as this emulates their natural home in the Mediterranean. So long as the soil isn't waterlogged, your olive should prosper in a sunny site.

It can be planted in the ground or in a container – a pair of potted olive trees makes a classic feature on either side of your front door or outdoor steps.

Olea europaea is best suited to planting in spring in sunny, sheltered south-facing positions.

It can grow indoors or outdoors, as long as it's protected from temperatures below -7°C and any potential frost.

In winter, use a material around the trunk like garden fleece for extra protection from the elements.

Into the Ground

Choose a sunny spot in a sheltered part of the garden. You'll need a spade, watering tool, and moist well-draining soil or peat-free multi-purpose compost.

  1. Dig a hole that is at least double the width of the plant's rootball.
  2. Mix in some well-rotted compost or soil.
  3. Carefully remove your tree from its container and place it in the hole, making sure its straight.
  4. Line up the top of the rootball with the surface of the soil and don’t bury any stems.
  5. Backfill around the roots.
  6. Water generously so that moisture reaches the roots.

Into a Pot

Ready to pot up your Olea europaea?

Olive trees grow well in pots and look great on your patio, balcony or house entrance. If you live in a colder climate, you can also bring container-planted olives indoors in winter.

Grab your pot with drainage holes, watering tool and some tree and shrub compost.

  1. Find a pot at least twice the size of the plant's temporary container.
  2. Raise it onto pot feet to assist drainage.
  3. Add potting compost to the pot, filling up to about three-quarters.
  4. Gently loosen the roots of your plant and place it in the container, ensuring the trunk is straight.
  5. Make sure the top of the rootball is level with the top of the soil, at the same level it was in its previous pot, and don’t bury any stems.
  6. Backfill around the roots, firm the compost and water well.
  7. If necessary, move the pot to a more sheltered location in the winter.
