Why We Love It

Although a fern by name and by nature the Asparagus Fern is actually a member of the lily family.

This South African native prefers areas that are low in light and thrives in humidty.

A perfect choice to liven up any bathroom. Although a delicate plant with feathery foliage, the Asparagus Fern boasts thorny stems and inedible berries.

This plant does not enjoy being touched or over-handled. Asparagus Fern (Asparagus setaceus) may have a reputation for being a proper fusspot, but she sure does make a pretty houseplant.

This beauty has the most tactile feathery leaves that are lovely to run your hands through. Each delicate stem of this plant (which is not actually a fern) is covered in feathery green foliage.

The green stems tend to spread outwards and behave more like tendrils as they grow, either climbing up a support or spilling over the edge of the pot or hanging planter.

Let the leaves spread out so they develop to their fullest and put on their greatest show. They look lovely; airy, graceful and with excellent texture.

To stop the foliage shrivelling up, mist the leaves on the regular, keep the soil moist during the growing season and ensure this diva is neither too hot nor too cold.

Planting Calendar

Plant in March, April, May, September, October, November.

Planting and Care

Your asparagus fern will thrive in bright, indirect light, with regular misting.

Water through the summer (if in a sunny position, water well and if in a shady position water only to keep the soil moist to touch.)

Into a Pot

If you're planting into a pot or container, have a hand trowel and a watering tool ready, plus a container larger than the one your plant arrived in.

  1. Pour a small amount of soil at the bottom of your chosen container.
  2. Put the plant in place and then back-fill soil around the rootball.
  3. Lightly water after repotting. The soil should be just damp enough that if you press your forefinger into the soil it is moist above the top of your nail.
  4. Regularly check the soil is moist but not soaking or sitting in water.
