Why We Love It

Cerise-toned and wonderfully scented the 'James L.

Austin' rose is a stand-out option for your outdoor spaces.

The hardy medium-sized shrub rose was named after David Austin Junior's late brother in 2017 and features large and intense pink flowers on both single and cluster stems.

With careful deadheading throughout the summer and autumn you'll get repeat shows until the end of the season.

These bold blooms also emit a light fruity fragrance that you can enjoy while sitting outside.

A backdrop of dark green foliage really makes the rosettes pop – plant yours in a border or container by a pathway for glimpses of colour every day.

The decorative pot is sold separately.

How to Plant

The compact and bushy 'James L. Austin' rose prefers full sun, so choose your spot well. You should also keep an eye out for pests, though it does have excellent disease resistance.

Into the Ground

Plant at the front of a border and in groups of three for the best display. Just grab your loam-based compost, a trowel, some water and fertiliser to begin.

  1. Soak the potted rose to soften the rootball for planting.
  2. Dig a space twice the size of the plant's rootball and mix in some compost and all-purpose fertiliser.
  3. Gently tease out some roots and position the rootball into the hole.
  4. Fill in the hole around it with more compost and soil.
  5. Pat down a bit, then water well until established.
  6. Fertilise twice yearly in late winter and early summer.
Into a Pot

The 'James L. Austin' is the ideal size for a potted rose garden. You'll need a new container twice as large as the old as well as some loam-based compost, fertiliser, a trowel and some water.

  1. Sit the potted rose in a tub of water to prepare the rootball.
  2. Fill the new, larger container with loam-based compost mixed with soil and some fertiliser.
  3. Shake off any excess soil and release a few roots before placing the rootball in the new pot.
  4. Back-fill the pot and pat down.
  5. Water well and fertilise in late winter and early summer.
