Why We Love It

‘Silver Posie’ is a creeping thyme that has tiny green leaves with white margins and a delicious scent.

Originally hailing from the Mediterranean this compact evergreen shrub has aromatic foliage and is covered with pale purple flowers (and happy pollinators) from July to September.

Thyme is a classic culinary herb loved for its taste and scent.

It’s hardy and drought tolerant and loves nothing more than full sun and a free-draining soil.

‘Silver Posie’ grows well in a pot on its own or with other delicious herbs.

It’s perfect for alpine gardens and rockeries and can even be used as an alternative to grass releasing a calming scent every time you step out onto the lawn.

How to Plant

Your thyme is best planted in spring (March to May) or autumn (October to November). Recreate its Mediterranean origins by placing it in a full sun spot with well-drained soil. It prefers neutral to alkaline soil but will also manage in acidic conditions.

Into the Ground

When you're ready to give your ‘Silver Posie’ a new home, gather a trowel, horticultural grit and a watering can.

  • Work some horticultural grit into the soil to prepare it for your plant.
  • Dig a hole twice the size of the shrub's rootball.
  • Plant your thyme, backfill with soil and firm down. Water in well.
  • Every year, cut back after flowering to prevent any woody stems – late August and early September are ideal times.
  • Your new plant favours dry conditions, though remember to water regularly for the first few months after planting.

Into a Pot

Miniature thyme flourishes in patio pots. Grab a trowel, a large pot (terracotta works well), horticultural grit and a watering can.

  • Fill your container with potting compost, mixing in horticultural grit for drainage.
  • Dig a hole double the size of your thyme's rootball and place it in.
  • Backfill with soil, firm down and water in.
  • Every year, prune back generously in late summer to keep your plant looking fresh.
  • Water regularly while your plant makes itself at home.
