How to Plant
The Trachycarpus fortunei is a hardy palm so you can choose to plant it at any time of the year, but spring and summer tend to be the best options. Once you've chosen a bright, sunny and sheltered spot, you'll find it easy to grow and maintain throughout the year.
Into the Ground
Ready to plant your palm? Have a spade and a watering tool ready, along with some moist but well-drained soil or peat-free multi-purpose compost.
- Dig a hole that is twice the size of the Trachycarpus fortunei's rootball.
- Carefully remove your palm from its container and allow the rootball to soak before you move on.
- Place it in the planting hole, back-filling with soil until it is secure.
- Water thoroughly so that the wet reaches the palm roots.
Into a Pot
If you're planting into a pot or container, you'll need the same tools, plus a container larger than the one your palm arrived in.
- Pour a small amount of soil at the bottom of your chosen container.
- Put the palm in place and then back-fill soil around the rootball.
- Water thoroughly and add more soil as needed.
