Why We Love It

Common thyme has dark grey-green aromatic leaves that have a multitude of uses.

The plant's a feast for butterflies and bees, too, with soft white or pink, early-summer flowers that are rich in nectar.

How to Plant

Thyme thrives in full sun. Plant it in well-drained chalky, sandy or loamy soil of neutral or alkaline pH.

Into the Ground

  1. Water your plant well.
  2. Dig through the soil to loosen it.
  3. Make a hole twice as wide as the rootball.
  4. Place your plant in the hole. Make sure that the top of the roots are visible and level with the surface of the soil.
  5. Fill in the hole with soil, firming to remove air pockets.
  6. Firm the soil and water well.

Into a Pot

  1. Cover the drainage holes in your pot using stones or pieces of broken pot.
  2. Add the compost to your container.
  3. Gently loosen the roots of your plant and place it in the container.
  4. Check that the top of the roots is level with the top of the compost, approximately 2.5cm below the edge of the container.
  5. Fill the container.
  6. Firm the compost and water well.
