Why We Love It

If you’re after the jungle look, the Giant White Bird of Paradise is one of the most tropical-looking plants you can find. And this is an enormous one.

Famed for its large paddle-shaped leaves that fan out dramatically from the base, Strelitzia nicolai is most commonly known as the Giant White Bird of Paradise; named for the exotic, feathery flowers that bloom on mature plants in the wild.

Its natural home is Zimbabwe, Botswana and Mozambique, so this is one to grow indoors in the UK.

In the wild, it can grow to 6m, but indoors it's more likely to reach about 3m.

Giant White Bird of Paradise facts

Watch your head...

This is one of the largest species of Strelitzia, commonly found in the forests of South Africa, where its height gives it a competitive advantage for sunlight.

Artist's muse...

Famous floral artist, Georgia O’Keefe, painted the Giant White Bird of Paradise during her time spent in Hawaii in the 1940s, and it is one of her most famous paintings from that time.
