Why We Love It

The Sarcococca ruscifolia is a delightful evergreen shrub that's fully deserving of its nickname 'fragrant sweet box'.

Its scented creamy-white flowers will add a winter radiance to any outdoor space.

This plant will reward you with a second-helping of colour during the summer with a smattering of deep red berries.

These provide a nice level of contrast against the dark green glossy leaves which can be enjoyed throughout the year.

The Sarcoccocca ruscifolia is incredibly low-maintenance and needs just a little pruning to help it retain its shape.

Although this bushy shrub prefers partial shade it isn't fussy about where it lives.

If you're looking to fill sloping borders or dry shady spots the Sarcococca ruscifolia is an ideal addition.

The decorative pot is sold separately.

How to Plant

The Sarcoccoca ruscifolia prefers a partially shaded spot but will thrive in a sunny position with frequent watering. It's happy in chalk, clay, loam or sandy soils that are well-draining. Although it's fully hardy, this plant does like a bit of protection from cold winds. If your shrub looks as though it needs pruning, wait until it has finished flowering and snip the branches carefully back into shape.

Into the Ground

When you're ready to plant your Sarcoccoca ruscifolia, gather a spade and watering can. You'll also need some moist soil or peat-free compost.

  1. Dig a hole that's twice the size of your plant's rootball.
  2. Place your shrub carefully into the hole.
  3. Backfill with the soil or compost and press down lightly around the base to secure the plant.
  4. Water generously.
  5. Add a little more soil if necessary.

Into a Pot

If you're planting in a pot, you'll need a trowel and a watering can, as well as some moist soil or peat-free compost. Choose a planter that's wide and deep enough for plenty of growth.

  1. Sprinkle some of the soil or compost in the base of the pot.
  2. Pop in your shrub.
  3. Backfill with the soil or compost, so your plant is firmly in place.
  4. Water generously.
  5. Top up with soil if needed.
