Why We Love It

'Black Tower' is a deciduous shrub with purple-tinted leaves.

Its foliage is dressed by clusters of musky white flowers in late spring.

These are followed by purple-black berries that are edible when cooked.

Planting and Care

This hardy plant will appreciate full or partial sunlight. It's best grown in moist, well-drained soil of any pH.

Into the Ground

  1. Dig a hole two or three times the size of the rootball of your plant.
  2. Mix in compost or manure in a 50:50 ratio with the soil removed for the hole. This is particularly important in quick-draining or poor-quality soils.
  3. Plant with the top of the rootball 1-3 inches above ground level, to allow for settling.
  4. Backfill with your soil mixture, tamping down as you go to remove air pockets, and water well.
  5. Dress with one or two inches of woodchip or mulch to conserve moisture and keep weeds at bay.

Into a Pot

  1. Line the bottom of your container with a porous fabric such as landscape fabric, to prevent the drainage holes getting clogged with soil.
  2. Add a small quantity of your soil mixture to the bottom of the pot to act as a bed for the rootball. You want the top of the rootball to sit around one inch below the rim of the container.
  3. Water well, adding more soil to compensate for any settling. below the rim of the container.
