Why We Love It

A date palm (Phoenix canariensis) makes a dramatic statement to a pot on a sunny terrace or sunny conservatory.

It's actually one of the more hardy of the palms and will look after itself if you give it a sunny and sheltered spot and are prepared to bring it indoors in cold and wet winters.

How to Plant

You can keep your palm at a manageable height if you grow it in a large pot.

Into the Ground

  1. Dig a hole to at least double the width of the plant's rootball.
  2. Mix in some well-rotted compost or soil.
  3. Insert your plant, lining up the top of the rootball with the surface of the soil.
  4. Backfill around the roots and water it well.

Into a Pot

  1. Gloves on for this.
  2. It's a spiky customer.
  3. Fill a pot at least twice the size of the plant's temporary container.
  4. Raise it onto pot feet to assist drainage.
  5. Add potting compost to the pot, filling up to about three-quarters.
  6. Insert your plant into the pot, lining up the top of the rootball with just under the pot's rim.
  7. Backfill around the roots and water well.
