A date palm (Phoenix canariensis) makes a dramatic statement to a pot on a sunny terrace or sunny conservatory.
It's actually one of the more hardy of the palms and will look after itself if you give it a sunny and sheltered spot and are prepared to bring it indoors in cold and wet winters.

You can keep your palm at a manageable height if you grow it in a large pot.
Into the Ground
- Dig a hole to at least double the width of the plant's rootball.
- Mix in some well-rotted compost or soil.
- Insert your plant, lining up the top of the rootball with the surface of the soil.
- Backfill around the roots and water it well.
Into a Pot
- Gloves on for this.
- It's a spiky customer.
- Fill a pot at least twice the size of the plant's temporary container.
- Raise it onto pot feet to assist drainage.
- Add potting compost to the pot, filling up to about three-quarters.
- Insert your plant into the pot, lining up the top of the rootball with just under the pot's rim.
- Backfill around the roots and water well.
