Why We Love It

Gardenia jasminoides also known as 'Cape Jasmine' is most notable for its spectacular fragrance.

The bold fresh and exotic scent makes it a staple ingredient of perfumes and scented candles.

It's a looker too with its crisp white petals arranged into funnel or bowl-shaped flowers surrounded by glossy dark green leaves.

Gardenia jasminoides can be a sensitive sort but can still thrive outside.

To help it through a cold British winter give it some shelter and place it in warmer areas.

It'll also do well in a greenhouse or in containers that can be moved indoors in colder weather.

Whether indoor or outdoor you'll need neutral or slightly acidic soil for the best results.

The decorative pot is sold separately.

How to Plant

Gardenia jasminoides is a native of warmer climes, so needs a bit more TLC in the winter. However, it can be grown outdoors in warm areas – just make sure you find it a sheltered spot.

Into the Ground

Ready to plant your Gardenia jasminoides? Grab your spade, fork, watering tool, a bucket of ericaceous compost and fertiliser.

  1. Choose a sheltered location protected from cold winter winds.
  2. Mix ericaceous compost into the ground.
  3. Dig a hole twice the size of the plant's rootball.
  4. Insert your plant, with the top of the rootball level with the ground.
  5. Gently backfill with your soil and compost mixture.
  6. Water well. Keep the soil moist but not too wet.
  7. Feed with fertiliser through spring and summer.

Into a Pot

The great thing about a Gardenia jasminoides in a pot is you can move it indoors during really cold snaps. It's a hungry plant, so give it a quality ericaceous compost, then grab your trowel and a watering tool to get planting.

  1. Make sure your container is placed somewhere that it's raised. This will avoid waterlogging.
  2. Dig a hole twice the size of the plant's rootball.
  3. Insert the plant, with the top of the rootball level with the top of the soil.
  4. Backfill the hole.
  5. Water well and consistently – keep the soil moist but not too wet.
