Why We Love It

With vibrant claret-red flowers and a contrasting crown of creamy yellow stamens, Clematis ‘Madame Julia Correvon’ is an exceptional garden climber.

It’s a viticella type, known for flowering during the peak of the summer season and refusing to run out of steam until autumn tightens its grip.

Perfect for growing in containers, this deciduous clematis holds a Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit (AGM) for excellent garden performance.

Planting Calendar

Plant in March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November.

Flowers in July, August, September, October.

Planting and Care

Into the Ground

  1. Water the clematis thoroughly around an hour before planting.
  2. Before planting, place supports such as trellis in position.
  3. Improve the soil by digging-in well-rotted garden compost or leaf mould.
  4. Dig a hole that’s at least cm away from the fence or wall.
  5. Make the hole slightly wider and a little deeper than the pot that your climber was supplied in.
  6. Remove the temporary container and plant with the top of the rootball just below the soil surface, then firm in well.
  7. Water and don’t allow the soil to dry out.
  8. Clematis like their roots to be kept cool and moist, so shade the base with pebbles or low-growing plants.

Into a Pot

  1. Find a pot that’s twice the size of the rootball, ideally cm deep, with drainage holes.
  2. Fill with good quality soil-based compost.
  3. Make a hole slightly bigger and a little deeper than the rootball.
  4. Place the plant into the hole so the top of the rootball is just below the soil surface.
  5. Firm in and water well.
  6. Clematis like their roots to be kept cool and moist, so shade the base of the plant with pebbles.
  7. Provide support such as an obelisk or trellis.
