Begonia masoniana 'Iron Cross'

Out of Stock

Why We Love It

Particularly attractive due to its tightly bullate, crater textured, predominantly green, thick, fuzzy leaves which have contrasting deep red, almost black edging and the classic 'Iron Cross' pattern at their centres. Native to India, China & Vietnam.

  • When backlit or in sunshine, this species glows bright red due to its patterning.
  • Fast grower.
  • Lets you know when it is thirsty by wilting and bounces back to shape when watered.

Growth pattern: Rhizomatous, clump-forming & bushy

Water: When the top 2-3cm of soil becomes dry. Do not allow water to sit on the leaves.

Ideal Position: South, east or west facing

Light: Bright, indirect light. Can take some direct light.

Humidity disclaimer: This plant will grow well outside of a terrarium or cabinet. However, all tropical plants thrive with higher humidity levels. To achieve this we suggest grouping plants together, or putting them in a bathroom or kitchen which gets regular use.

Planting and Care

Into a Pot

If you're planting into a pot or container, have a hand trowel and a watering tool ready, plus a container larger than the one your plant arrived in.

  1. Pour a small amount of soil at the bottom of your chosen container.
  2. Put the plant in place and then back-fill soil around the rootball.
  3. Lightly water after repotting. The soil should be just damp enough that if you press your forefinger into the soil it is moist above the top of your nail.
  4. Regularly check the soil is moist but not soaking or sitting in water.
  5. Make sure to place your plant away from any harsh drafts.
