Why We Love It

If you’re after something moody and architectural, our Elephant Ear 'Regal Shields' is for you.

The Elephant Ear (or Alocasia to give it its formal name) is native to Eastern Australia and Asia, instantly recognisable for its enormous heart-shaped leaves, with eye-catching lighter green veins running through them.

But ours is that little bit more special…

We’ve sourced the ‘Regal Shields’ for its almost black leaves and unusual matte/velvet texture.

In its natural rainforest environment, Alocasia will climb up trees seeking out light, and in fact, you can see Alocasias in the Palm House at Kew wrapped around the iron pillars growing up to the light.

But don't worry, at home its a bit more well-behaved and is the perfect specimen for a pot.

Alocasia Facts

1950s icon...

Growing in the tropical rainforests of South-East Asia for 28,000 years, domestic versions of Alocasia exploded in popularity in the 1950s.

To us, there’ll always be a vintage vibe to this classic lady.

Jack and the Beanstalk...

Alocasia is 'the tree that grows up to the heavens' and is said to be the plant in all the Western and Eastern versions of the fairytale of Jack and the Beanstalk.

Want to know more?

  • You'll find Alocasia in the Palm House at Kew
  • Current height: 120 cm, current spread: 100 cm
  • You wont need to 'plant' this houseplant. Leave the plant in its nursery pot, and put the whole thing into a decorative pot to create "the look"
  • Needs bright, but indirect light. It's leaves will burn under direct sunlight (ouch)
  • Mist your plant every morning, just like they do at the Kew Palm House
  • Pets and kids? Harmful if eaten and a skin and eye irritant, so take care
