Why We Love It

The dark green leaves of Laurus nobilis provide year-round foliage and add wonderful flavour to a variety of dishes.

Bay leaves are a popular cooking herb and their scent adds a rich aroma to your border or patio.

It can eventually grow up to approximately ten metres but is very easy to trim.

Clip it a couple of times in the summer with your secateurs so it keeps its elegant pyramid shape.

Those glossy leaves can be prone to wind scorch so choose a sheltered and sunny/partially sunny spot.

It may need protecting if the temperature dips below.

If you live in a cold part of the country grow your Laurua nobilis in a pot and bring it indoors during the winter.

The decorative pot is sold separately.

How to Plant

The lovely, pyramid-shaped tree adds an interesting outline to your planting scheme, as well as year-round foliage. It can also be planted in a container – a pair of potted bay trees makes a classic feature on either side of your front door or outdoor steps.

Into the Ground

Choose a sunny or partially sunny spot in a sheltered part of the garden. The soil must be moist and well-draining. You'll need a spade, a fork and loamy, soil-based compost.

  • Water the plant's roots in its temporary container.
  • Mix in some compost with the soil and dig it over well.
  • Dig a hole that's twice the size of the rootball.
  • Pop in the plant and backfill with the soil and compost mix.
  • Water it well.

Into a Pot

Laurus nobilis thrives in a pot and looks great on your patio, balcony or house entrance. If you live in a colder climate, you can also bring container-planted bays indoors in winter. You'll need a pot with drainage holes, broken pieces of pot and a loamy, soil-based compost.

  • Water the plant's roots in its temporary container.
  • Place the pieces of broken pot across the base of the new container.
  • Cover the base with a shallow layer of compost.
  • Place the tree in the pot and fill with compost.
  • Water thoroughly.
