Why We Love It

The Cordyline australis is Palm Tree-esque with its lance-shaped leaves and a single strong stem.

Native to Australia and New Zealand it up to eight metres and a spread of around four metres it's smaller than regular palms but easily gives your patio balcony or garden that tropical feel.

Especially when the small fragrant flowers and fruit that blooms in the summer and autumn begins to appear.

The decorative pot is sold separately.

Find the perfect base for any style of planting explore our full range of pots here.

How to Plant

Cordyline australis is a hardy palm so you can choose to plant it most times of the year, but spring and summer tend to be the best option, as long as the ground is not frozen.

Into the Ground

Ready to plant your palm? Have a spade and a watering tool ready, along with some moist but well-drained soil or peat-free multi-purpose compost.

  1. Dig a hole that is twice the size of the Cordyline australis rootball.
  2. Carefully remove your palm from its container and allow the rootball to soak before you move on.
  3. Place it in the planting hole, back-filling with soil until it is secure.
  4. Water thoroughly so that the wet reaches the palm roots.

Into a Pot

If you're planting into a pot or container, you'll need the same tools, plus a container larger than the one your palm arrived in.

  1. Pour a small amount of soil at the bottom of your chosen container.
  2. Put the palm in place and then back-fill soil around the rootball.
  3. Water thoroughly and add more soil as needed.
  4. In cold months, move the pot into a shed, garage or unheated room for extra protection.
