Why We Love It

Origanum vulgare ‘Compactum’, or oregano, has masses of pink flowers and fragrant foliage. The aromatic leaves are popular in Italian and Greek cuisine and are used in hundreds of recipes, so harvest them in summer while pollinators make the most of the blooms. It's a hardy perennial, so it rests in winter, then comes back in spring – just make sure the soil's well-drained and gets full sun. Oregano doesn't need lots of water and will thrive in neutral soil.

How to Plant

Introduce a feel of the Mediterranean to your garden and kitchen with the aroma of origanum.

This versatile herb bursts with taste and can be potted and sat on your patio or perched on your balcony – conveniently for you to have a few sprigs of fresh flavour on hand, to add to your cooking. It's a low-growing herb, so it can be used to cover a bed in your garden, lying ready for harvest from June to September.

Into the Ground

Choose a bed that’s well-drained – anywhere that receives sunshine. You’ll need your spade, a watering tool and some compost to plant into the ground.

1. Dig a hole twice the size of the herb’s rootball.

2. Pop your plant inside and coat it with compost.

3. Water your plant, so the ground is soft and moist.

Into a Pot

You’ll need some multipurpose compost, a watering can and a small trowel.

1. Take your trowel and fill your pot with compost.

2. Water your pot so the compost is soft, loose and moist.

3. Place the plant into the hold.

4. Backfill the soil.

5. Leave your pot on a windowsill in the sun.
