Why We Love It

'Mount Aso' – also known as the 'Japanese pink pussy willow' – promises intrigue with its glistening fuzzy catkins.

When they appear in late winter and spring you won't be able to resist touching those silvery-pink curiosities.

They bring a welcome burst of colour and their attractive hue is reminiscent of the Japanese cherry blossom.

Salix gracilistyla also produces bushy foliage that's formed of slightly blue-coloured leaves with a silver underside.

This deciduous shrub can reach approximately four metres high and if you plant more than one of them the effect is a blanket of colour like a blazing sunset.

The decorative pot is sold separately.

How to Plant

Salix gracilistyla enjoys full sun, and its easygoing nature means it is happy in an exposed or sheltered spot. It grows well in moist but well-drained soil.

Into the Ground

It's easy to plant, so grab your watering tool and spade and get digging. Add some organic matter at step one if your soil is on the chalky side.

  1. Loosen the soil where you are going to be planting your Salix gracilistyla.
  2. Dig a hole for your plant that's twice the size of its rootball.
  3. Place your plant in the hole, gently loosening the roots as you do.
  4. Insert a stake if required.
  5. Refill the hole.
  6. Firm the soil and water well. Water regularly in dry periods during the growing season.
  7. Prune your plant every two to three years in spring.
Into a Pot

Choose a container that's large enough for your plant to spread out. Get your spade, compost, watering tool, and some pieces of broken pot or stones.

  1. Cover the drainage holes of your planter with a piece of broken pot or some stones.
  2. Add some loam-based compost to the container.
  3. Gently loosen the roots.
  4. Place your plant in the pot.
  5. Water regularly to ensure the compost remains moist.
