Why We Love It

In autumn, 'Soleil D'or' is covered in a profusion of orange berries.

It's dense and thorny with relatively pale leaves.

This evergreen hedge is good for growing on boundaries or against walls.

How to Plant

A type of firethorn, 'Soleil D'Or' is a versatile plant, happy in sun or partial shade. Ideal for a hedge, though you can also plant it as a free-standing shrub. Alternatively, let its berries brighten up your patio by planting it in a container.

Into the Ground

Leave 60 cm of soil clear around your plant. You'll need your spade and some well-rotted organic matter.

  1. Water your plant generously in its temporary pot.
  2. Fork through the soil to loosen it.
  3. Dig a hole twice as wide as the plant's rootball.
  4. Break up compacted soil around the hole's edges. Dig in organic matter.
  5. Place your plant into the hole. Ensure that the top of the roots are visible and level with the surface of the soil.
  6. Backfill the hole, removing air pockets where possible.
  7. Firm the soil. Water well.
Into a Pot

Your plant will grow best in full sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil. If you opt for a hedge, prune it in early to mid-summer, or just trim any out-of-place branches if you've planted it as a standalone. To show off the berries in autumn, cut branches to 2 or 3 leaves from the base after the flowering season.
