Why We Love It

Portuguese laurel (Prunus lusitanica) is an elegant, evergreen shrub that is a popular choice for hedging, with its glossy leaves on maroon stems.

The small white flowers attract butterflies in summer and then red berries follow which are a treat for birds.

It's easy to maintain at the height you want with regular trimming.

How to Plant

This plant is native to Portugal so it thrives in full sun. It can be alright in partial shade but aim to plant it in a bright spot of your garden in moist but well-drained soil. Wear gloves and wash hands after handling.

Into the Ground

Portugal laurel can be grown in containers as a topiary plant. You'll need a large container (at least 1.5 times the size of the temporary pot), some growing medium, a trowel and a watering can.

  1. Fill your pot with soil.
  2. Dig a hole twice the size of the plant's rootball.
  3. Place your laurel in the hole, lining up the top of the rootball with the soil level.
  4. Backfill the hole, gently patting it in place.
  5. Water generously.
  6. Repot every couple of years to ensure your laurel has room to grow.

Into a Pot

If you're planting your 'Portugal laurel' as a hedge, be sure to keep 1 metre between each plant so that they have room to grow. You'll need a spade, fork, some compost and a watering tool.

  1. Use your fork to mix your compost into the soil, aiming to go about 20-30 cm deep.
  2. Dig a hole double the size of your laurel's rootball.
  3. Place your plant in the hole, lining up the top of the rootball with the soil level.
  4. Backfill with your excavated compost and soil mixture.
  5. Water generously to help the roots settle. It's best to water regularly during the first year.
