Why We Love It

With its deep purple foliage, the small but mighty 'Tom Thumb' will bring year-round colour to your garden. When mature, it has dramatic, undulating plum-coloured leaves, which contrast nicely with the light green young growth in spring. Also appearing in spring are small, dark flowers that give off a honey-like scent at night. A compact and slow-growing shrub, 'Tom Thumb' is ideal for growing in containers. It will enjoy a spot against a south-facing wall, as it likes sunshine and shelter from cold winds. 'Tom Thumb' is happy to be pruned and can easily be clipped into a classic rounded shape – you could try pairing it with ornamental grasses or other foliage plants for a stunning visual effect all year round.

The decorative pot is sold separately. Find the perfect base for any style of planting, explore our full range of pots here.

How to Plant

'Tom Thumb' is easy to grow in moist but well-drained soil. It will do fine in partial shade, though a spot in full sun will help the leaves to develop their full colour. A sheltered position will help protect it from frost and cold winter winds, and allow it to thrive.

Into the Ground

Ready to plant your Pittosporum tenuifolium 'Tom Thumb'? Grab your spade, fork, watering tool, some well-rotted compost and soil improver.

  1. If your soil is heavy, improve drainage by mixing in plenty of compost.
  2. Dig a hole twice as big as the plant's rootball. Sprinkle in some soil improver.
  3. Pop your plant into the hole, at the same depth it was at in the pot.
  4. Backfill and firm down.
  5. Water well.
Into a Pot

You'll need a container a bit bigger than the one the plant came in and some potting compost. Grab your spade and a watering tool too.

  1. Raise your container on bricks to help water drain away.
  2. Fill your container with compost.
  3. Dig a hole twice the size of the rootball.
  4. Insert your plant into the hole, with the rootball at the same depth it was at in its pot.
  5. Backfill around the roots and firm down.
  6. Water well.
