Why We Love It
Why We Love It
The Viola 'Königin Charlotte' is an attractive perennial that has small but extremely beautiful blooms. In late winter or early spring, you can expect the plant's heart-shaped dark-green leaves to be accompanied by deep purple upward-facing flowers that carry a uniquely sweet scent. Violets have been used for their fragrant qualities since medieval times, where they would mask smells or even complement dishes. Today, they continue to be an important ingredient in the perfume industry. This hardy semi-evergreen plant is easy-to-grow and will need regular deadheading to encourage healthy growth. If you want to keep its compact shape, simply cut back after flowering.
The decorative pot is sold separately. Find the perfect base for any style of planting, explore our full range of pots here.
How to Plant
How to Plant
The Viola 'Königin Charlotte' will prefer to be planted in either full sun or partial shade in a sheltered location. Any soil will do, as long as it's moist but well-drained.
Into the Ground
Before you start planting, make sure your chosen spot is free from weeds and any potential frost. Your violet will arrive in a coir fibre pot with peat-free compost, so it's all ready to plant into the ground. Once you're set, grab your spade, watering tool and peat-free compost.
- Dig a deep hole roughly twice the size of the 'hairy pot' your plant arrives in.
- Mix in a generous amount of soil and peat-free compost.
- Gently place your hairy pot inside.
- Backfill soil and water generously until well established.
Into a Pot
If you're giving your Viola 'Königin Charlotte' a pot for a new home, make sure it'll have the space it needs to grow. When you're ready, grab your large pot, spade, watering can and peat-free compost.
- Sprinkle in a mixture of soil and peat-free compost to the bottom of the pot.
- Gently place your 'hairy pot' and plant into the hole.
- Backfill soil, firm up and water thoroughly.
- Repot with fresh compost every two to three years.
