Why We Love It
Why We Love It
With its lavender-blue flowers held aloft on upright stems, the 'Mariposa Blue' will brighten up your outdoor space all summer. It's also known as the pincushion flower, thanks to the stamens that poke up from its rounded blooms. They're easy to look after, requiring little feeding and weathering dry periods well once established. Just make sure your soil is the well-draining type – clay soil might give you one good season but with proper drainage, this is a perennial. Deadheading will encourage repeat blooming. You can clip the plant in midsummer to stimulate a flush of new colour in early autumn. The 'Mariposa Blue' will look great in a rock garden or the front of a border, where it will attract the butterflies.

How to Plant
How to Plant
In a bid to reduce unnecessary plastic waste, your 'Mariposa Blue' will be supplied in a 'hairy pot' made from coir fibre. Planted in moist ground, the roots will grow through the container, which gradually breaks down. Alternatively, you can peel the pot away from the rootball before planting and compost it.
Into the Ground
Ready to plant your 'Mariposa Blue'? Grab your fork, a trowel and a watering can. Some compost will also help the plant get established.
- Mix compost into the top layer of soil.
- With your trowel, dig a hole twice the width of the 'hairy pot'.
- Set the pot in the hole with the top level with the soil surface.
- Backfill and water well.
Into a Pot
'Mariposa Blue' will do well in containers with a moist but well-drained growing medium. You'll need a container with drainage holes, and lining it with a porous cloth will prevent soil clogging the holes. You'll also want a good-quality potting mix.
- Raise your container on pot feet to improve drainage.
- Add a layer of potting mix to the bottom of your container.
- Pop your 'hairy pot' on top of the potting mix, with its top a few centimetres below the rim of your container.
- Backfill and give the plant a good watering.
