Why We Love It

The Magnolia x soulangeana is a visually exciting shrub suited to a range of backdrops. An enduringly popular type of magnolia, it is perfect for planting in beds and borders, but can also be grown in a pot as a focal point in any garden or patio. Also known as a 'Saucer magnolia' or 'Chinese magnolia', it has large goblet-shaped flowers that are a rose-pink shade and produce a fragrant aroma when they bloom in late spring. Its dark green, glossy foliage will add a fresh burst of colour to your outdoor space throughout the year. This magnolia won't need much attention and is generally very manageable apart from an occasional pruning in midsummer when its flowers have faded.

The decorative pot is sold separately. Find the perfect base for any style of planting, explore our full range of pots here.

How to Plant

The Magnolia x soulangeana prefers either full sun or partial shade. It's suited to moist and well-drained acidic soil like clay and loam and is fully hardy.

Into the Ground

Since your magnolia can grow to be a fair height, make sure you choose a site that gives it the space it needs. Have your spade, watering tool and soil or peat-free compost ready to go.

  1. Dig a hole that is at least twice the size of the plant's rootball.
  2. Remove any surrounding weeds and grass.
  3. Gently place your magnolia inside the hole, being careful not to loosen the roots too much.
  4. Backfill with soil, firm up and then water thoroughly until well established.
Into a Pot

Have a spade, watering tool, soil and compost on hand before you start planting. But, most importantly, be sure to choose a pot or container that will give your magnolia the space to spread its roots.

  1. Add some soil or compost to the bottom of your pot, mixing in a little root feed for an added boost.
  2. Hold your plant in place without loosening the roots.
  3. Add soil as needed and then firm up and water.
