Why We Love It

The eye-catching orange-red flowers of the Rhododendron 'Santa Maria' are ideal for adding warmth to your chosen space.

This strong-growing bushy plant has vibrant funnel-shaped flowers and glossy dark green leaves.

It's an easy way to spice up your garden's colour palette especially in late spring and early summer when the large blooms appear.

The 'Santa Maria' will suit borders beds and rockeries or you could put it in a pot to make it the focal point of a patio or balcony.

It might be compact but this bold evergreen shrub really makes a visual impact wherever you choose to plant it.

It's popular too having won the RHS Award of Garden Merit in 2013.

The decorative pot is sold separately.

How to Plant

The Rhododendron 'Santa Maria' will suit a spot in partial shade, with moist but well-drained acidic soil like clay, loam and sand. It's a hardy shrub, but keep it sheltered to protect it from frost and other harsh temperatures. Pruning is generally not needed, apart from deadheading to remove old flower heads.

Into the Ground

While rhododendrons can be easy to grow, it's important to have moist, ericaceous (acidic) soil with a high organic content on hand. The 'Santa Maria' can grow up to a metre in height so be sure to leave some distance between your shrub and any other plants in the area.

  1. Clear your chosen space of any weeds or debris.
  2. Dig a hole no deeper than the top of the rootball.
  3. Add plenty of ericaceous compost around the sides, plus some feed to promote growth.
  4. Water and keep moist all season, especially in the summer.

Into a Pot

The Rhododendron 'Santa Maria' will do well in a pot or container, but it's worth re-potting every three years for best performance. Once you've chosen a pot that is at least twice the size of the shrub's rootball, grab your moist ericaceous soil, spade and watering tool.

  1. Add some soil and feed to the bottom of your pot.
  2. Hold your rhododendron in place as you backfill around the rootball.
  3. Water thoroughly.
