Why We Love It

With its stunning sprays of salmon-pink flowers the 'Razorbill' dwarf rhododendron brightens up early spring.

This rhododendron variety is a compact evergreen shrub with a neat growing habit.

The upward-pointing tubular flowers are flushed deep pink inside and as it's free-flowering they'll keep blooming throughout the spring.

With so much going for it you can see why this rhododendron is a winner of the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

While it prefers a moist soil it gets along fine in drier soils too – just make sure it doesn't overheat in the sun.

Its slow spread makes it an excellent choice for growing in containers or it will be equally at home in a border or rock garden.

The decorative pot is sold separately.

How to Plant

Rhododendron 'Razorbill' needs its soil to be slightly acidic, with a pH of around 4.5 to 6. If yours is too alkaline, try mixing in well-rotted compost or sulphur to increase the acidity. A container filled with ericaceous compost is another good option. If possible, use rainwater to water the plant as it's less alkaline than tap water – if you use tap water, let it stand for half a day so the chlorine can evaporate.

Into the Ground

Make sure your soil is slightly acidic – you can mix in an acidic matter such as composted tree bark or pine needles – then grab your spade, fork and a watering tool.

  1. Mix in some acidic compost to improve your soil
  2. Dig a hole double the size of the plant's rootball.
  3. Plant shallow, with the top of the rootball level with the soil surface.
  4. Backfill and water well.
  5. Add at least 8 cm of acidic mulch to the top layer.

Into a Pot

You'll need a container slightly bigger than the one the plant came in, and some ericaceous peat-free compost. You'll also want your spade and a watering tool.

  1. Raise your container on bricks to ensure good drainage.
  2. Fill your container with compost.
  3. Dig a hole twice the size of the rootball.
  4. Pop your plant into the hole, lining up the top of the rootball with the soil surface.
  5. Backfill and water well.
