Why We Love It

Introduce some Japanese elegance to your garden with this violet-coloured Azalea.

'Geisha Purple' is known for producing masses of blooms and from May to June is covered with vivid purple trumpet-shaped flowers.

For the rest of the year glossy dark green foliage adds interest to your outdoor space.

This hardy shrub is easy to grow for such a showstopper with a compact form that means it's simple to maintain.

We love including this azalea as part of a Japanese garden and this miniature variety is especially suitable for pruning into zen topiary from curved hedges to spherical shapes.

You won't be the only one admiring its vibrant flowers either: it's a useful food source for visiting bees and other pollinators.

The decorative pot is sold separately.

How to Plant

Get your 'Geisha Purple' settled in spring. It's happiest in dappled shady spots but will thrive in full sun if its delicate roots are protected with a mulch. This shrub is an acid-lover, so plant accordingly in moist and well-drained soil.

Into the Ground

Time to plant your Azalea in the ground? You'll need a trowel, ericaceous compost, acidic mulching material, mycorrhizal fungi and a watering can.

  1. Prepare your soil by digging in some ericaceous compost.
  2. Make a hole twice the size of the rootball and sprinkle on mycorrhizal fungi.
  3. Drench the rootball with water and place it so the top sits close to the surface.
  4. Backfill with compost – no need to compress it.
  5. Water in with rainwater.
  6. Add a layer of mulch, avoiding the stem.
  7. Water twice a month while it gets established.

Into a Pot

'Geisha Purple' is the perfect choice for a pot. Find a trowel, a large pot, ericaceous compost, acidic mulching material, mycorrhizal fungi and a watering can.

  1. Fill your container with ericaceous compost.
  2. Create a planting hole double the size of the rootball and add mycorrhizal fungi.
  3. Drench the rootball and place it in the hole, ensuring the top is level with the surrounding soil.
  4. Fill loosely with compost, and water with rainwater.
  5. Apply a mulch, making sure it doesn't cover the stem.
  6. Take extra care during the first two months after planting – water twice a month.
