Why We Love It

The rambling 'Albertine' rose brings a delightfully English feel to an outside space.

In midsummer you'll see its buds open out transforming into large light pink blooms.

This plant loves to clamber up a wall or fence arching its thorny stems to find new spots for its glossy leaves and solitary or clustered flowers.

In the early summer this beauty also emanates a gorgeous perfume from amongst the petals.

‘Albertine’ is happy enough even in poor soils and as a climber it's suitable for growing into trees.

It truly adores the sunshine so give it a spot where it can catch some rays.

The decorative pot is sold separately.

How to Plant

Choose a sunny spot by a wall or fence to provide adequate support for the rose. Pop it in some moist but well-drained soil. Then, apply a balanced fertiliser and mulch in the early spring to yield the best blooms.

Into the Ground

'Albertine' is happy in chalk, loam or sandy soils, and isn't fussy about the pH level. You'll just need a trowel, some compost, mulch and a full watering can.

  1. Improve your soil by mixing in a generous amount of compost.
  2. Dig a hole double the size of the plant's rootball.
  3. Plant with the 'bud union' – the point where the rose stem has been grafted onto a rootstock from another plant – level with the soil surface.
  4. Backfill with your soil and compost mixture, tamping down as you go to remove air pockets. Then, water well.
  5. Add mulch to the top layer of soil to keep it from drying out, but keep the area immediately around the stems clear of mulch to avoid rot.

Into a Pot

When planting in a container, give 'Albertine' a well-draining, richly organic soil mix including perlite grit.

  1. Choose a container not much bigger than the pot the plant came in.
  2. Mix up your soil and fill the pot.
  3. Make a hole that's twice the size of the plant's rootball.
  4. Place your plant into the container, then fill with the soil mix.
  5. Re-pot every couple of years, pruning off the ends of the roots.
