Why We Love It

With its fragrant blooms and pink-tinged hues the ‘Hot Chocolate’ is a truly unique rose.

It's a relative newcomer to the rose scene introduced by US breeder Tom Carruth in the early 21st century and hailed as the first brown rose.

The buds of this plant unfurl to reveal orangey russet petals that mellow to a warm and indulgent pinkish-brown colour as the flowers mature.

The rich scent is just as delicious as the sight and you can enjoy the repeating blooms all summer.

Give it a sunny spot and some fertile soil to get its roots into and the 'Wekpaltlez' rose – also known as the 'Hot Chocolate' rose – will be a real treat for anyone enjoying your outdoor space.

How to Plant

The ‘Hot Chocolate' rose is fairly unfussy about soil type, but it will need decent drainage and some organic matter for nutrition. It loves the sunshine, but it can do well in areas of partial shade too.

Into the Ground

Ready to plant your ‘Hot Chocolate' rose? Grab your spade, fork, watering tool, a bucket of compost and fertiliser.

  1. Mix compost and fertiliser into the top 20-30 cm of the soil.
  2. Dig a hole twice the size of the plant's rootball.
  3. Plant the rose, lining up the graft union (where the branches start) with the top of the ground.
  4. Gently backfill with your soil and compost mixture.
  5. Water well.
  6. Top-dress with mulch and feed with fertiliser every spring.
  7. In the first winter after planting, prune strong stems back to 30-40 cm above ground level.
  8. Dead-head and trim spindly growth during the growing season.
Into a Pot

You'll need a large container, a spade or trowel and a watering tool. You'll also want a growing medium – a blend of compost and potting soil with perlite and bonemeal is ideal.

  1. Raise your container to avoid waterlogging.
  2. Dig a hole twice the width of the plant's rootball.
  3. Insert the rose, lining up the graft union (the point where the branches start) with the top of the soil.
  4. Backfill the hole.
  5. Water well.
  6. Pot up every couple of years with fresh compost.
