Why We Love It

Allium schoenoprasum commonly known as 'Chive' has narrow spikes of foliage.

These have an onion-like scent and flavour and produce spheres of purple pollinator-friendly flowers come summer.

How to Plant

Allium schoenoprasum likes some sun and moist, well-drained soil of any pH. Add grit if the soil you use is clay-heavy.

Into the Ground

Before you do anything, choose a location that is well-drained and free from weeds. Then grab your spade, watering tool, soil and well-rotted organic matter.

  1. Dig a hole that is twice the size of the herb's rootball.
  2. Gently remove your plant from its original container, teasing out the roots.
  3. Hold your sage in place and then backfill soil with a spade or by hand.
  4. Water thoroughly then cover the surface with organic matter.
Into a Pot

The most important thing when planting herbs in a pot is to be sure it has drainage holes and enough space for your herb to grow.

  1. Add some stones or gravel to your pot to help with drainage.
  2. Sprinkle in some soil then pop your plant in.
  3. Backfill the rest of the soil, firm up and then water.
