Why We Love It

'Trumpet Honeysuckle' is a hummingbird-friendly climber with blue-green foliage.

Its thin, tubular flowers appear in the spring, displaying scarlet-orange petals with yellow centres.

Vibrant red berries appear in the autumn.

How to Plant

Grow it in full sunlight for optimal fragrance. This plant will thrive in moist, well-drained fertile soil of any type and pH.

Into the Ground

You'll need some organic compost and your trowel.

  1. Cover the drainage holes in your container with stones.
  2. Add your compost.
  3. Loosen the plant's roots.
  4. Place the plant into the pot, with the top of the rootball level with the top of the compost.
  5. Fill the container. Firm down and water well.
  6. Tie the plant to the original canes and guide them to your support.
  7. Check regularly. When the climber reaches the support, tie it on and guide stray shoots into position.

Into a Pot

Grab some organic matter, bonemeal and your spade.

  1. Dig a hole 30 to 60 cm from your wall or fence and twice as wide as the rootball.
  2. Loosen the soil and dig in some organic matter.
  3. Gently loosen the plant's roots.
  4. Place the plant into the hole, with the top of the rootball level with the top of the soil.
  5. Add a handful of bonemeal and refill the hole.
  6. Firm the soil. Water well and add mulch.
  7. Tie your climber to the original canes and guide them to your support.
  8. Check regularly. When the climber reaches the support, tie it on and guide stray shoots into position.
